Walter Launt Palmer

Walter Launt Palmer (1854-1932) was an American Impressionist painter renowned for his winter landscapes and intimate interiors. Born in Albany, New York, to a sculptor father, Erastus Dow Palmer, he was introduced to the art world at an early age. This background greatly influenced his path into the arts.

Palmer studied under the guidance of Frederic Edwin Church, a key figure of the Hudson River School, which instilled in him a love for landscape painting. His formal training took place at the Art Students League of New York, enhancing his skills and techniques. As he developed his style, he embarked on travels to Europe, where he was introduced to Impressionism. This exposure to European methods and styles left a lasting impact on his work, and he began to merge the atmospheric qualities of the Hudson River School with the light and color techniques of the Impressionists.

Most notable in Palmer’s oeuvre are his snow-covered landscapes. He had an exceptional ability to capture the shimmering effects of snow under sunlight or moonlight, which earned him the nickname “Painter of the American Winter.” In terms of artists with similar styles, Palmer’s winter scenes can be compared to those of Childe Hassam and John Twachtman, fellow American Impressionists who also often depicted snowy landscapes.
