George Stubbs

George Stubbs (1724-1806) was an eminent British painter celebrated primarily for his portrayal of horses. Born in Liverpool, he took up his training as a portrait painter but developed an intense interest in the anatomy of animals, particularly horses. This interest culminated in his extensive study of equine anatomy, which led him to spend eighteen months dissecting horses to understand their structure.

Stubbs’s meticulous and scientific approach to understanding equine anatomy greatly influenced his artistic style. His paintings are characterized by precise details, anatomical accuracy, and a naturalistic rendering of the horse’s form, elevating him to a master of equine art. His best-known work, “Whistlejacket”, is a prime example of his unique style, capturing a horse in its full grandeur against a stark background.

While horses were his specialty, Stubbs was also adept at painting other animals and produced a series of works portraying wild animals, including lions and tigers. His influence can be traced in the works of later equine artists and animaliers, such as Sir Alfred Munnings.

Though deeply rooted in the traditions of the 18th-century British school of painting, Stubbs drew inspiration from the Classical art of antiquity, especially in the poised and statuesque quality of his subjects.

In the realm of British art, George Stubbs holds a distinct position as an artist who seamlessly blended scientific observation with artistic expression, setting a benchmark for equine art that remains influential to this day.
