Lesser Ury

Lesser Ury (1861–1931) was a German Impressionist painter and printmaker, most acclaimed for his atmospheric cityscapes and intimate interiors. Born in Birnbaum in Prussia (now Międzychód, Poland), Ury moved to Berlin, where he would spend much of his life, establishing himself as a significant figure in the city’s art scene.

Ury’s oeuvre is diverse, spanning from landscapes to portraiture, but he is particularly revered for his depictions of Berlin streets under varying conditions: rain-soaked boulevards, twilight scenes, and bustling cafes. His fascination with light, especially as it played on wet streets, produced some of his most evocative works. These pieces often evoke a sense of solitude amidst urban hustle and bustle, resonating with the poetic and the atmospheric.

Ury was significantly influenced by French Impressionism and the Barbizon School, especially their techniques in capturing transient effects of light and mood. He has been frequently compared to his contemporary Lovis Corinth, although Ury’s work is often softer and more atmospheric compared to Corinth’s bold and expressive approach.

Despite facing anti-Semitic prejudices in his lifetime, which often hampered his career, Ury’s talent was undeniable. Over the years, recognition of his contribution to German Impressionism has grown, placing him firmly among the country’s pantheon of notable artists. Today, his works serve as evocative records of Berlin’s urban landscape during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
