Bhupen Khakhar

Bhupen Khakhar (1934-2003) was an influential Indian painter known for his vibrant, figurative paintings that tackled complex themes of identity, sexuality, and societal observations. Born in Mumbai, India, Khakhar initially trained as a chartered accountant before pivoting to a career in art, where he played a pivotal role in the modern art movement in post-colonial India.

Khakhar’s painting style is characterized by a unique blend of narrative, often drawn from his own personal experiences, and an audacious use of color and form. His works often depict ordinary people in everyday scenes, but with an undercurrent of deeper social commentary. A self-proclaimed homosexual, Khakhar was one of the first Indian artists to address issues of sexuality and same-sex love in his work, at a time when such subjects were largely taboo in Indian society.

Associated with the Baroda School of Art, his style was influenced by both Indian popular art traditions and Western art practices, particularly pop art. His incorporation of traditional motifs and contemporary themes created a distinct style that made him a seminal figure in Indian contemporary art.

Artists like Atul Dodiya and Sudhir Patwardhan have been influenced by Khakhar’s work. Dodiya, in particular, has often paid homage to Khakhar in his own paintings. Throughout his life, Bhupen Khakhar remained unapologetically authentic, breaking boundaries and challenging societal norms, leaving an indelible mark on the Indian art scene.
