Egon Schiele

Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was an Austrian figurative painter known for his raw, expressive portrayal of the human body. A major figure in early 20th century art, Schiele’s work is emblematic of the Expressionist movement.

Born in Tulln an der Donau, Austria, Schiele demonstrated an early aptitude for drawing. His education took him to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he came under the influence of Gustav Klimt, a dominant figure in the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt recognized Schiele’s talent and took him under his wing, introducing him to the arts and crafts workshop Wiener Werkstätte, and to a circle of patrons and collectors.

Schiele’s art is renowned for its intense introspection and exploration of sexuality and the human form. His figures are often depicted in twisted poses, with a raw, unfinished quality. This, combined with his bold use of line and unrestrained expression, showcased a stark departure from the decorative style of his mentor Klimt. His works often delved into themes of desire, decay, and death.

The artist’s life and career were tragically short. He faced controversies, including a brief imprisonment for alleged obscenity and the use of minors as models. However, Schiele’s career saw a shift towards a more refined style and recognition in the art world just before his untimely death during the Spanish flu pandemic at age 28.

While his inspirations included Klimt and the broader Expressionist movement, Schiele’s influence is profound, evident in the works of later artists like Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon. His unabashed portrayal of vulnerability and the human psyche remains a testament to his vision and continues to resonate in contemporary art.
