Born in Tulln an der Donau, Austria, Schiele demonstrated an early aptitude for drawing. His education took him to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he came under the influence of Gustav Klimt, a dominant figure in the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt recognized Schiele’s talent and took him under his wing, introducing him to the arts and crafts workshop Wiener Werkstätte, and to a circle of patrons and collectors.

This, combined with his bold use of line and unrestrained expression, showcased a stark departure from the decorative style of his mentor Klimt. The artist’s life and career were tragically short. He faced controversies, including a brief imprisonment for alleged obscenity and the use of minors as models. However, Schiele’s career saw a shift towards a more refined style and recognition in the art world just before his untimely death during the Spanish flu pandemic at age 28.
