Mikhail Larionov

Mikhail Larionov (1881–1964) was a seminal Russian avant-garde artist who played a crucial role in the development of Russia’s modern art movements in the early 20th century. His work spans various styles, from Impressionism and Symbolism to a distinctive brand of Primitivism, eventually leading to the creation of the Rayonism movement.

Initially inspired by Impressionism and the Post-Impressionist movements from France, Larionov’s early works were vibrant and colorful. However, as he delved deeper into the exploration of Russian folk art and its roots, his style shifted towards Primitivism, displaying bold forms and bright colors reminiscent of Russian folklore and peasant life.

Around 1911, Larionov developed Rayonism with his lifelong partner and fellow artist Natalia Goncharova. Rayonism, or Rayism, was an abstract art movement, distinctive for its representation of light and radiation patterns as intersecting rays. This pioneering style can be seen as a precursor to Futurism and Orphism.

Larionov was deeply influenced by traditional Russian art forms, French modernist movements, and his close association with Goncharova. In terms of artists with a similar style or ethos, Natalia Goncharova stands out, as they often collaborated and inspired one another. Other contemporaries in the Russian avant-garde circle, such as Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandinsky, also explored similar themes, though each with their unique interpretation.
