Moses Soyer

Moses Soyer (1899-1974) was a Russian-born American painter, renowned for his intimate depictions of everyday life and the human figure. Born in Borisoglebsk, Russia, Moses, along with his brothers Raphael and Isaac, emigrated to the United States in 1912, where they would all become influential figures in the American art scene.

Soyer’s work is deeply rooted in the Social Realism movement, an art style that sought to shine a light on the plight and daily lives of working-class individuals. His paintings are characterized by their introspective, often pensive subjects, ranging from dancers and artists to ordinary people, all depicted with a keen sensitivity and a focus on their inherent dignity.

Throughout his career, Moses was inspired by the dynamism of New York City and was profoundly influenced by the social and economic struggles of the Great Depression. His art served as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the people during these times.

Artists with a similar style and thematic focus include his brother Raphael Soyer, as well as other Social Realists like Edward Hopper and Isabel Bishop. Their works collectively portray a specific era in American history, capturing moments of quiet reflection, solitude, and the undeniable strength of the human spirit.

Moses Soyer’s legacy lies not only in his evocative portraits but also in his dedication to portraying the authentic human experience, free of embellishment, in all its rawness and beauty.
