Esther Pissarro

Esther Pissarro (née Bensusan) (1870-1951) was an English artist, printer, and bookbinder. Born in London, Esther was integral to the Arts and Crafts movement and played a vital role in fostering the craft of bookbinding during her lifetime.

In her early years, Esther was influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement’s principles, which emphasized the value of traditional craftsmanship as a counterpoint to the rapid industrialization of the era. This influence drove her to engage deeply in the revival of artisanal bookbinding techniques, and she soon became known for her beautifully designed and meticulously crafted bindings.

A significant turn in Esther’s life occurred when she married the painter Lucien Pissarro, the eldest son of the famed Impressionist Camille Pissarro. Together, Esther and Lucien founded the Eragny Press, named after the French village where Camille Pissarro had his home. The press became renowned for its handcrafted books, combining Lucien’s wood engravings with Esther’s bindings, reflecting both their artistic sensibilities and the ethos of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Esther and Lucien’s works drew inspiration from the natural world, emphasizing harmony, simplicity, and a deep appreciation for craftsmanship. Their shared philosophy echoes the sentiments of other Arts and Crafts figures like William Morris and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

In the broader scope, while Esther Pissarro’s name might not be as globally recognized as her father-in-law’s, her contributions to the Arts and Crafts movement, particularly in the realm of bookbinding and the legacy of Eragny Press, hold an important place in the history of art and design. Her commitment to the integration of artistry and craftsmanship serves as a testament to the movement’s enduring principles.
