Adonna Khare

Adonna Khare (born 1980) is an American artist recognized for her large-scale pencil drawings. While her birthplace is in the U.S., her art has achieved international acclaim, particularly after she won the ArtPrize competition in 2012 with her piece “Elephants”.

Khare’s style is meticulous and detailed, combining real-world animals with imaginative scenarios, resulting in whimsical and often surreal illustrations. Though her primary medium is carbon pencil, the sheer size of her works can be monumental, filling entire walls of gallery spaces.

Her inspiration often stems from personal experiences, her environment, and the natural world, though she imbues her creatures with human-like qualities and emotions, making them highly relatable to viewers. The animals in her drawings are not just representations of the wild but are often metaphors for personal stories, challenges, and emotions.

Artists with a similar inclination towards detailed, fantastical renditions of animals, albeit in different mediums or styles, include the likes of Brian Mashburn and Tiffany Bozic. Khare’s work, however, is distinct in its commitment to the graphite medium and the seamless blend of the familiar with the fantastical.
