Moise Kisling

Moïse Kisling (1891-1953) was a Polish-born French painter, predominantly associated with the School of Paris, a group of artists who were residing in the French capital in the first half of the 20th century.

Kisling’s style can be characterized as a blend of post-impressionism and expressionism, with a touch of the fauvist color palette. His works often featured landscapes, still lifes, and portraits, rendered with rounded, almost sculptural forms and striking, bright colors.

Born in Kraków, Poland, Kisling moved to Paris in 1910, becoming a close acquaintance of artists like Amedeo Modigliani, with whom he shared certain stylistic affinities, especially in his portraits. The bohemian Montparnasse quarter served as a hub for many of his interactions and became the backdrop for his artistic evolution.

The trauma of World War I, during which he served in the French Foreign Legion, influenced the trajectory of his art, infusing it with a melancholic undertone. Later, World War II forced him to flee Europe to the United States, due to his Jewish heritage.

Artists with stylistic similarities to Kisling include Juan Gris and André Derain, both of whom also participated in the vibrant Parisian avant-garde scene during the same period.
