Richard Schmid

Richard Schmid (1934-2021) was an American realist painter known for his exceptional skill in capturing light and atmosphere in his works. Recognized for his contribution to the contemporary American realist movement, Schmid’s art showcases a blend of both classical and modern techniques.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Schmid’s early education at the American Academy of Art in Chicago set the foundation for his deep understanding of artistic techniques. Later, under the tutelage of William H. Mosby, a renowned classical painter and instructor at the Academy, Schmid refined his skills and delved deeper into the principles of traditional European painting.

Schmid’s oeuvre is extensive and varied, encompassing landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and figure paintings. His mastery over the alla prima (or “wet into wet”) painting technique allowed him to capture the immediacy of a scene or subject with both precision and spontaneity. This is particularly evident in his plein air landscapes, where the play of light and shadow is rendered with an almost palpable atmosphere.

While he was deeply influenced by the Old Masters and Impressionists, especially the likes of John Singer Sargent and Joaquín Sorolla, Schmid’s style is distinctively his own. Moreover, he didn’t just limit his legacy to his artworks; his book, “Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting,” is a seminal text for contemporary realist painters.

Artists inspired by or working in a similar vein as Schmid include contemporaries like Nancy Guzik and his own daughter, Molly Schmid. His influence in the realm of contemporary realism is expansive, with numerous artists drawing inspiration from his teachings and his dedication to the craft of painting.
