Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976) was a prominent German expressionist painter and printmaker. A key figure in the early 20th-century German art scene, he co-founded the influential Die Brücke (The Bridge) group, an association of young artists that aimed to bridge the old with the new in art.
Born in Rottluff, Germany, Schmidt-Rottluff began his artistic journey in Dresden, where, in 1905, along with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, and Fritz Bleyl, he established Die Brücke. This movement was central to German Expressionism, emphasizing raw emotion, vivid color, and distortion to communicate inner experiences. The group sought to create new and revolutionary artistic forms, breaking away from academic traditions.
Schmidt-Rottluff’s style is characterized by bold colors, stark contrasts, and a rough, almost woodcut-like treatment of forms. His landscapes, still lifes, and portraiture consistently demonstrate a primal energy, with jagged lines and abstracted shapes. His early work is particularly marked by an interest in primitivism, a feature common among the Brücke artists.
Though Die Brücke disbanded in 1913, Schmidt-Rottluff’s expressionistic style endured. He later incorporated more abstract elements, but his fundamental approach remained consistent.
His inspirations can be traced to African and Oceanic art, as well as to Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and the Fauvists. Artists like Max Pechstein and Emil Nolde, who also associated with the Brücke group, exhibit a kindred spirit in their art, emphasizing emotional intensity and a departure from realism.
