Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was an iconic Austrian Symbolist painter, best known for his distinctive style that often combined symbolic, erotic, and allegorical subjects. Klimt’s primary oeuvre lies in his paintings, but he also undertook numerous architectural decorations.

Emerging during the Vienna Secession movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Klimt’s work was a reaction against the traditional historicism of the academic art establishment. His most celebrated painting, “The Kiss,” epitomizes his golden phase, where he incorporated gold leaf into his compositions, reminiscent of Byzantine mosaics.

Klimt’s female portraits, like “Adele Bloch-Bauer I” and “Portrait of Fritza Riedler,” are celebrated for their intricate detail, luxurious patterns, and the sensuous depiction of his subjects. A sense of eroticism is also a recurring theme in his works, as seen in “Danaë” and “Water Serpents I.”

He drew inspiration from various sources including Egyptian, Minoan, Classical Greek, and Byzantine inspirations. Klimt’s later works move into a more abstract and symbolic direction, as can be observed in his landscapes which bear a dreamlike quality.

Egon Schiele, a protégé of Klimt, is often linked with a similar expressive style, although Schiele’s works are more raw and emotive. Klimt’s influence can be observed in a myriad of modern artists who draw from his intricate patterns and rich symbolism.
