Marie Laurencin

Marie Laurencin (1883-1956) was a significant French painter and printmaker, primarily associated with the Parisian avant-garde and the Cubists. Though influenced by Cubism, Laurencin’s work is more characterized by its soft pastel hues, graceful figures, and dreamlike, lyrical scenes which often celebrate femininity and romantic love.

Born in Paris, Laurencin received her early training at the Académie Humbert, where she first encountered Georges Braque. By the early 20th century, she was a part of the vibrant Montparnasse quarter’s bohemian circle and developed close ties with poets, writers, and artists like Guillaume Apollinaire and Picasso. She was romantically involved with Apollinaire for some time, and this relationship introduced her to the Bateau-Lavoir group, subsequently immersing her in Cubist circles.

While her early work showed a considerable Cubist influence, Laurencin soon diverged to develop her distinct style. Her choice of a soft palette, often using muted pinks and grays, combined with the recurrent portrayal of groups of women or ethereal, girlish figures, makes her work instantly recognizable.

Despite the connections to Cubism, Laurencin’s unique approach places her somewhat outside direct art movements of her time. However, she shares aesthetic similarities with artists like Marc Chagall, in terms of dreamlike and poetic qualities. Throughout her career, Laurencin also ventured into book illustrations, stage design, and ceramics, further cementing her legacy in the world of art.
