Paul Klee

Paul Klee (1879-1940) was a Swiss-born artist known for his individualistic style that drew inspiration from a myriad of sources including Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Klee is often described as a “painter’s painter” due to his deep explorations into color theory and his innovative approaches to laying down pigment onto various mediums.

Born in Münchenbuchsee, Switzerland, Klee later settled in Germany where he became an integral figure in the early 20th-century art scene, teaching at the Bauhaus School alongside other prominent artists like Wassily Kandinsky. His time at the Bauhaus significantly influenced his style and techniques.

Klee’s works are known for their dreamlike qualities, often using a plethora of symbols and signs derived from his interest in the unconscious and dreams. His paintings are characterized by a whimsical yet methodological approach, featuring a delicate harmony between color and form.

Throughout his life, Klee was deeply inspired by music, poetry, and his travel experiences, particularly in Tunisia where he was profoundly affected by the quality of light and the landscapes.

Artists whose works share affinities with Klee’s style include Joan Miró and Wassily Kandinsky, though Klee’s unique blending of various movements and his individualistic symbolism make his works stand distinctively on their own.
