Aristarkh Lentulov

Aristarkh Vasilyevich Lentulov (1882-1943) was a pivotal Russian avant-garde painter who played a significant role in merging the modernist tendencies with traditional Russian folk motifs in the early 20th century. Born in the town of Nizhny Lomov near Penza, Lentulov studied art in various schools, notably under the tutelage of the famous Russian artist Ilya Repin at the Penza School of Art.

In his early career, Lentulov was deeply influenced by the Symbolism movement. However, after moving to Moscow and later Paris, he was exposed to and profoundly influenced by Cubism. This stylistic shift became evident in his paintings, where fragmented forms, bold colors, and dynamic compositions dominated his canvases.

What set Lentulov apart was his synthesis of these Cubist principles with Russian Orthodox icons and folk art. This combination birthed vibrant cityscapes, where iconic buildings of Moscow, such as the St. Basil’s Cathedral, were rendered in kaleidoscopic patterns and exuberant colors.

Lentulov was not just a painter but also a prominent stage designer, working with major Russian theaters during his lifetime. He was also an active participant in various avant-garde associations, including the “Jack of Diamonds” group.

Artists with styles resonating with Lentulov’s blend of Cubism and Russian traditions include Natalia Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov. Through his unique and innovative approach, Lentulov has solidified his place in the annals of Russian modern art.
