Anthony Thieme

Anthony Thieme (1888–1954) was a Dutch-American painter known for his luminous and picturesque landscapes. Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Thieme emigrated to the United States, where he eventually settled in Rockport, Massachusetts. Rockport, with its charming harbor scenes, rocky shorelines, and quaint architecture, would become a favorite and recurrent subject in his works.

Thieme’s style is rooted in the traditions of American Impressionism. His canvases radiate with light, capturing the transient effects of sunlight on water, buildings, and foliage. He had an innate ability to seize the atmosphere and mood of a scene, whether it was the tranquility of a New England harbor or the bustle of a street in his native Europe.

His inspirations were manifold. The European Impressionists, like Monet and Pissarro, undeniably influenced him. Yet, his work also shares a kinship with American contemporaries such as Childe Hassam and Willard Metcalf, who similarly focused on capturing the beauty and light of the American landscape.

In terms of artists with a similar style, Emile Gruppe, a fellow Rockport artist, comes to mind. Both shared a love for the New England coast and had a comparable luminous approach to their respective works.

Throughout his career, Anthony Thieme’s paintings were well-received, making him a prominent figure in the Rockport art community and a significant contributor to the American Impressionist movement. His works serve as a testament to his deep appreciation for the beauty inherent in everyday scenes, both in America and abroad.
