Uemura Shōen (1875-1949) was a renowned Japanese painter who is best remembered for her significant contributions to the nihonga (Japanese-style painting) movement. Born as Uemura Tsune, in Kyoto, she adopted “Shōen” as her art pseudonym.
From a young age, Shōen showed a strong inclination towards painting. While she initially started with traditional themes from Japanese and Chinese classics, over time, she carved a niche for herself by focusing on the theme of bijin-ga, or beautiful women.
