Sir Anthony van Dyck (22 March 1599 – 9 December 1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in his native Flanders and in Italy. Born in Antwerp, van Dyck displayed a remarkable artistic talent from a young age and became a chief assistant to Peter Paul Rubens, the foremost Flemish painter of the early 17th century.
Van Dyck’s style is marked by his elegant, often elongated figures and a refined use of color and tone, moving away from the robust, dramatic compositions typical of Rubens.
